AWARD WINNING ALYTH GOLF CLUB BECOMES MORE ACCESSIBLE
By Courtesy of Scottish Golf View

Alyth Golf Club is celebrating after securing an award to make its club more accessible to its members and visitors. The Perthshire club made an application for an Awards For All grant to obtain funds to purchase a buggy and storage facility to ensure less abled golfers could continue to enjoy the game at their club.
The forward thinking club formed the Alyth Golf Club Disabled Users Group, after recognising some of their golfers were resigning from their membership. Managing Secretary for the club, Jim Docherty said: “It had become apparent that we were losing some of our members as they were no longer able to get around our course unassisted and were leaving due to health reasons.
“The club was keen to remedy the situation as soon as possible, so club members donated money to form and set up the group to specifically look after the interests of our less able members.”
The group recognised that buggies would help to resolve the accessibility issues and submitted the funding application, supported by local MP Peter Wishart.
The group was recently notified that his funding application had been successful and would receive a grant of £5,000. The Disabled Users Group met and agreed the award would be used to purchase a buggy and storage facility.
Jim Docherty said, “We were absolutely delighted when we discovered we would receive the award and are very grateful to the support we received which helped our application. It will make a huge difference to some of our members and we hope to attract some of the former members back to the club as well as coax new members to become involved and enjoy the game.”
Keen to keep the momentum going, the members group is now seeking to attract further funding from Perth and Kinross Council to buy three more buggies for the club and also hope to get support from Scottish Hydro Electric to instal electrical services for the buggies.
Hamish Grey, CEO at the Scottish Golf Union said, “Alyth is a great example of a club showing initiative and successfully ensuring their club and facilities are as inclusive as possible for its members and visitors alike."

Cheque presentation to Neonatal Unit Ninewells

Alyth Golf Club captain John Donnelly handed over a cheque today Sunday for £10,462 to Ninewells Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit, Dundee.
The money was raised through a sponsored golf day at the club, with 24 teams taking part. Following 18 holes, the golfers enjoyed dinner and were entertained by after-dinner speaker Dr Tom Dymock and comedian Jimmy Stirling.
The driving force behind the fund-raiser was managing club secretary Jim Docherty whose granddaughter Neve Younger was born 12 weeks premature, weighing a tiny 2lb 7oz.
Baby Neve spent a total of nine weeks in Ninewells Hospital, being cared for by staff in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), watched over by parents Ashley and Colin.
The special care baby unit at Ninewells is a regional intensive care unit providing care for babies from throughout Tayside and North-east Fife. Premature babies can be born up to 16 weeks early and weigh around the same as half a bag of sugar.
Alison Wright, Senior Nurse Neonatal Services, from the special care baby unit at Ninewells accepted the cheque from club captain John Donnelly.
Mr Donnelly said, “I am delighted by the response from my fellow members and the staff of Alyth Golf Club, the local business community, friends and family. I would also like to thank the golf clubs that donated tee-times for the prize draw and auction.
“Everyone gave so generously and rallied round Jim’s fundraiser making the event such a special and successful day.”
Receiving the cheque Alison said, “I would like to thank Alyth Golf Club for this very generous donation.
“In the unit we sometimes use special cots which have heated mattresses, these can benefit small babies.
“The cots are expensive and we plan to use this donation to purchase more."

McALPINE RETURNS TO CHAMPION FORM

It must be the Nairn air that turns on Kevin McAlpine. Earlier this month he won the Scottish amateur match-play championship over the Nairn links. At the weekend, he returned to the town to win the Tulloch Construction North of Scotland open amateur stroke-play championship for the David Blair Trophy over the Nairn Dunbar course.
It’s the first 72-hole SGU Order of Merit event that 22-year-old Kevin has won although he would have won the Cameron Corbett Vase at Haggs Castle earlier this summer but for three putts on the last green.
“I took a week off after the ‘Scottish’ because I was just exhausted but now I feel refreshed and the game is back in the groove,” said McAlpine.
“I really won at Nairn Dunbar with a third-round 68 which put me five shots clear of the field, even though I had a triple bogey 7 at the fifth. I finished very well with three birdies and an eagle in the last six holes for 32 home.”
Kevin is looking forward to making his debut for Scotland in the home internationals at Pyle & Kenfig next week. He has no thoughts of turning professional just yet – “I might have a go at making it to the Tour School at the end of next year.”
McAlpine’s closing round of two-over-par 74 for a final total of six-under-par 282 was much more pedestrian and that storming finish to his third round did indeed stand him in good stead at the end of the day.

Photos From the Day
Kevin McAlpine strode into the annals of Scottish Amateur history, as he was crowned the Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Champion 2006, this afternoon in Nairn.
The 22 year old from Alyth immediately followed his title success with a celebratory dip in the Moray Firth accompanied by his caddy, Steve Cochrane, who had bowed out of the competition earlier in the week.
After a sensational and strident performance this morning, the Alyth golfer played consistently throughout the afternoon and took the title, 8 & 7 after the 29th hole. A clearly ecstatic champion said, “It hasn’t really sunk in yet, but I am absolutely thrilled and over the moon.
My confidence was high, I was lucky during the week as I got a good draw and made some good shots during my games. The 6th hole in the front nine was my favourite, so I knew I could go out and play well and that helped me make a good start.
Title hopes were yet again to elude Paul O’Hara, finding
himself runner – up in the championship, having made it to two Scottish Amateur finals in three years. The Colville Park player said, “I holed absolutely nothing today which was very frustrating as I putted great all week. It just got away from me once I started missing my putts and my confidence just went
Commenting on the victor’s form, O’Hara added, “Kevin would have beaten anybody given his performance today.
Claiming the much coveted prize, McAlpine, who graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in the Liberal Arts, used a cack-handed approach this week whilst expertly chipping on to the greens. McAlpine said, “I broke my right knuckle in my last semester in March this year and thought that was my season over. Over the last couple of tournaments I played with a two finger overlap, before trying the interlocking grip again.
Son of Dundee United goalkeeper, Hamish, McAlpine handled the pressure well throughout the day. After an exceptional leading round in the morning, the champion adopted a more conservative approach in the afternoon, but never let his opponent in to the game.
With a 10 shot lead with only 12 holes to go, only a momentary slip of concentration cost McAlpine a bogey on the 26th. Ensuing wins from O'Hara on the 26th and 27th and a birdie on the 28th never saw him in contention, but narrowed McAlpine's margin to 8 up before clinching the Amateur title in front of the galleries.
Playing in a total of 8 matches over the past week, McAlpine now follows in the footsteps of Colin Montgomerie who won the title in Nairn back in 1987.
